Some of our favorite wineries are small family-owned operations. We have made many trips to Shadow Line Vineyard, located in Granite Falls, not only to celebrate special occasions but also to relax and enjoy friends and family.
The owners, Marvin and Geba Davenport, planted their first crop in 2012 and continue to add vines each year. The spacious tasting room and patio, added in 2017, are nestled among lots of shade trees. Randy and Donna are great hosts who are knowledgeable of the wines and genuinely enjoy what they do. The property is spacious and allows room to spread out and enjoy a picnic and bottle of wine. There is ample room for kids to play. They have a newly renovated stage and each Sunday starting in May there is live music 2-5 pm. The first Sunday of the month is open mike day. If the weather doesn’t cooperate there are lots of tables inside. They also have games and cards to entertain. Check out their website and Facebook page for their live music schedule.

Shadow Line has a wine for every palate. I would highly suggest enjoying a flight of wines to determine your favorites because you will have more than one favorite. The pours are generous and you could easily share so you can taste more wines. It had been several months since we had visited so I ordered a white wine flight. Charles ordered a red flight. I went with Pinot Grigio. The Pinot was light and crisp. Charles likes their Cabernet Sauvignon. I also liked the estate-grown Vidal Blanc. This wine pairs perfectly with spicy food. Its smooth texture cuts the spicy food just enough.
One thing I love about Shadow Line is Geba visits every table to introduce herself and answer any questions about the wines or winery. She will remember what wine each person enjoys when you return. She is happy to take the time to explain their wines and soon-to-be-released wines. They have a red blend that will be released in a few months. We also sampled a few wines that were outside our typical go-to wines. Most red wine drinkers enjoy a good rose during the hot summer months. Shadow Line has produced their first rose and it is light but has enough body to satisfy red wine drinkers. Their Blackberry Merlot is their best seller and can also be found in many local restaurants. We also tasted the Cranberry Shiraz and Raspberry Pinot Noir. They were medium-bodied with just the right amount of sweetness. They do offer a variety of sweet seasonal fruit wines that sweet wine drinkers will fall in love with.
As with all wineries outside alcohol is not permitted and smoking is only allowed in a certain area. Leashed dogs are welcomed. Picnics are permitted and they also offer assorted North Carolina cheeses and crackers for purchase. Check out Shadowline's website to get the latest information about events.
